Garden makeover

This project in Hornsby involved the creation of new garden spaces around a recently built house on very flat land. The owners had purchased the sub-divided block and managed the build but had not done anything to the garden beyond installing a pool in the rear and laying a sea of lawn.

As a result the garden lacked interest and the pool felt isolated and unappealing. The unattractive metal boundary fencing was visible all around and there was nowhere to relax or even potter in the garden.

Our solution was very simple and centered around removing all the grass apart from a portion beside the pool. We introduced a large deck area that floated over the existing al fresco area and out to the pool surround edge, creating a generous, level entertaining area that connected the living room with the pool and garden.

Dressed Spotted Gum screening replaced the boundary pool fence on two sides and less formal rough-sawn hardwood screening, under-planted with a native vine, was introduced along sections of the garden perimeter that required softening and additional privacy, providing visual interest. The same timber language was used to screen the pool plant – relocated discretely away from the pool area, for a bin store screen in the front and as a custom screen beside the entry porch.

The colour theme on the ground was a combination of grey and green to offset the mixed browns of the hardwood and mulch. Paths of organic Bluestone steppers, set within mass native groundcovers, connected the new garden areas and decking platforms finished in a weathered grey finish. Recycled granite pebble, raised feature edging in weathering steel, raised vegetable beds and hand-selected pots were also used to reinforce the design. Stainless steel LED lighting, semi- automatic irrigation and a low-profile, custom-designed steel carport structure completed the make-over.

The owners are now really enjoying their garden, not just mowing it, and love showing it to friends and family.
